I recently heard a talk at the 2026 American College of Sports Medicine national meeting describe a case that quietly rearranged how I think through aging physiology. Researchers studied an Olympic rower throughout his 20-year career. During this time, his maximum heart rate fell by about 20 beats per minute, which is the same decline that happens to all of us. And yet his capacity for aerobic exercise, called VO2max, barely changed. He kept winning medals into his 40s.
The amount of oxygen your body can use during hard exercise depends on how much blood your heart pumps to the body each minute. That number is calculated by multiplying two numbers together: how fast the heart beats (heart rate), and how much blood it pumps with each beat (stroke volume). As the heart beats faster, more blood is pumped. The way his capacity was maintained while his heart beat more slowly felt like a paradox. But it was physiology successfully compensating for aging.
Maximum heart rate is largely out of our hands. It drifts down by roughly one beat per year, mostly because the heart’s electrical pacemaker slows with age. There’s no amount of athletic training that can stop this decline.
Stroke volume is different. And it seems it is the lever we can control. Endurance training nudges the amount of blood our heart pumps upward by increasing blood volume, strengthening the heart muscle and improving how well the heart fills between beats. As the pump adapts, each beat carries more blood to our organs.
That’s what the rower’s body did. As his heart rate dropped due to normal aging, the volume his heart pumped with each beat increased to compensate. His heart compensated so well his VO2max held steady over time.
You might wonder why this matters for those of us who will never row in an Olympics. The answer is simple: The same machinery is in play for everyone. The heart’s ability to adapt is not reserved for the young or the elite athlete—its chambers stretch and strengthen during pregnancy and respond to training at any age. As we grow older, we fight to defend (and maintain) stroke volume.
We have more factors to consider in healthy aging than just high fitness. After all, pumping more blood per beat helps only if our vessels receiving the blood can handle it. But exercise benefits more than just stroke volume.
This lesson is encouraging. We tend to picture aging fitness as a slowing heart. A more accurate image would be a heart learning to do more with each beat and a body that, with steady effort, keeps that capacity within reach.
